HOME SWEET HOME

We're back in Chicago.I did just over 1200 miles in less than 24 hours, arriving yesterday at about 230pm.The final 350 miles were very difficult. Major fatigue started setting in and I just couldn't wait to get home. I felt further from home than at any point during the trip. I began to regret not getting a hotel room because I wasn't sure I would make it without proper sleep. On the other hand, I realized how adequate my bike is for sleeping on for an hour or so at a time, if not longer. With the feet up on the handlebars and your helmeted head on the top case, all you need is some upper back support...a bedroll works very well. Anyone tired enough will sleep. It beats a car seat for sure. I know from (much) experience.

Rolling into the city was a rude awakening. As much as I wanted to be home, the city itself felt inhospitable. It was hot and crowded with traffic. It was a far cry from the remoteness and beauty of Colorado. I climbed and descended beautiful, twisting mountain roads for hours at a time without a single car or traffic light. Now it was nothing but rows and rows of cars from one stop light to the next.

I still had no idea where Andy was, until we'd both been home for about 24 hrs. We shared stories and realized that at some point fairly early on he had stopped for gas and I passed him. I knew he was ahead of me because a retired couple in an RV said they saw him heading the opposite direction only minutes before stopping for gas. This meant he was just ahead of me. I could have caught him easily if he had not stopped for another 30 miles. Of course, at the time he had no idea I was behind him. All that matters is we both got home safe, and had a fantastic experience.

I learned a lot from this trip, but perhaps the one thing worth mentioning is the reward one receives from getting out of your comfort zone and taking risks. Its about a willingness to suffer in pursuit of a dream. Its about choosing to face potential obstacles, fears and challenges rather than trying to avoid them altogether. As a result, you feel incredibly alive by living in the moment. This is true freedom.

The birds are chirping. 429AM. Time to go...

Exit 17, I80 East

723 miles traveled today, out of Canon City Colorado. Just stopped for fuel near Underwood Nebraska after a frightening stretch of dark and lonely interstate through deer country. I see them from the median, their eyes reflecting in my headlight. I can't help but feel as though they resent me. They are stalking me. The bodies of their slain kin are strewn along the roadside, some alive only hours ago. I've never longed for sunrise more, or for the comfort and safety of home...400 miles away.

Andy and I got separated in Denver traffic. I took an exit that I thought was the agreed upon route, but in retrospect it was not the ideal route. He lost his phone yesterday, so the trip home is a solo journey for both of us. I hope he is ok. Probably sleeping somewhere as I write.

Independence Pass = Tears of Joy

After watching the USA Vs Slovenia game at the Silver Lodge Motel in Salida I headed north for Independence Pass. New pavement, no traffic, hairpin turns and dozens of switchbacks. The ride to the top was exhilarating. Gravity works in your favor when climbing. The turns always bank to the inside. With sheer drops and no guardrails this is a must. No wonder its closed in the winter.

There was a lot of snow up top...over 12,000 feet altitude. I was so overwhelmed with contentment and joy on the way down that I wept inside my helmet. I was listening to a song by The Who titled Gettin' In Tune or something like that. I've always liked that song. I thought of my lovely wife who taught me the importance in life of creating great memories. I'm very fortunate to have not only a beautiful, hardworking wife, but more importantly one who supports my wanderlust (how do you like that plug in an effort to make my return to Chicago a smooth one?).

Burger.

I'm wondering where Andy is now. Enjoying himself as much as I am no doubt. Thats all that matters. Andy is an adventure rider who thrives on challenges and I'm a sport tourer who craves the curves.

Bad Billy's in Aspen

Arrived in Aspen and ordered a burger. I get a free beer for being on a bike. I'm going to upload a few pics from along the route. Took Independence Pass of course...

Motorcycle Performance Headquarters

I need to put a shout out for Motorcycle Performance Headquarters in Farmington NM. These folks teamed up and worked hard to find me a tire locally. They did eventually find one in Durango, but not without making a LOT of calls. Ultimately their only reward was seeing us get back on the road. We can't thank them enough!

Farmington NM to Salida via Telluride

The tire waiting for me in durango was the wrong size. I felt bad for holding Andy up. It cost us more than a half day. Instead of waiting around he decided to head for the north rim of the grand canyon. A couple hours after he left I headed west to Marcos out of durango and north to telluride. Telluride is one of the most beatuiful places on earth. Seriously. I had the best ride I've ever had. Andy and I will hook back up in Canon City before heading back to Chicago. He will do 2000 miles in 4 days. Whoa.

Telluride and Blue Mesa

I got pulled over by the state police again. This time just outside Ridgeway CO. I expected another fine. Nope, got lucky. He told me I couldn't make it to Salida by dark, and to look out for Elk and deer crossing. I made it by dark. No Elk. Just 200 miles of joy.

Handlebar Motorcycles

Just rode in from Farmington New Mexico back to Durango Colorado. Getting my tire replaced at the shop below. The folks who helped us in Farmington were fantastic. More details to follow...

A few pics from the road

Four corners was closed! The ride out of durango was beautiful, but it became hot windy and barren. Cortez is strewn with native american tourist traps, gas stations, junk traders and trailer parks. The wind blows hot, hard and dry. I can't help but want to he'd back north into higher altitudes and more accommodating surroundings.

Bad tire...

Here's the tire. I did 80 miles on this tire. It looks like this about half way around. Hopefully it will be in the trash before tomorrow noon.

DETOUR: Americas Best Value Inn, New Mexico

we got to four corners and Andy happened to notice some steel radials showing through on my back tire. We tried to duck behind the hot bikes to get out of the sun and out of the pebbles being carried through the blasting wind to make some calls. Google maps saved the day. We found a shop with some incredibly helpful folks who are on the task of finding a tire that will fit. Worse case scenario is we're stuck here til Friday. Hopefully not!

Cyclists bombing the descent

Steamworks Brewing

Just sat down at the bar and ordered a couple house pilsners. We're quit tired from the ride into Durango from Montrose. Slow going because of cyclists and traffic. Best views by far...but we prefer solitude of the open road. Durango is much nicer than expected. World cup soccer on the TV...

SILVERTON COLORADO

we arrived in SILVERTON. They call it a Victorian mining town. Gorgeous. The region is known as the Switzerland of the rockies. No exaggeration at all. There are hundreds of cyclists doing the Ride The Rockies organized ride. This backs up traffic. I wish I had my roadbike out here. Although I'm in no shape to do 20 miles up mountain passes.

AMAZING!!

Ouray is incredible. Perhaps the most beautiful town I've ever been in anywhere in the rockies. We spoke to some other bikers who just came from where we are headed and they said is getting extremely hot. We'll see how it goes...

Canon City to Montrose

The ride west last night was incredible. I keep thinking it can't get any better...and it just keeps getting better. The ride from Morose to Cortez is supposed to be one of the best in the country. Its called the million dollar highway.

BUGS

You get tired of cleaning the dead bugs off the helmet visor every day. I must have killed about a thousand last might. We pulled into a gas station in Montrose last night, when a local came up and asked us if we saw the huge black bull on the side of the road. We did not. I guess he was loose and waiting to cross the road. Hitting a bull would be no softer then running directly into a brick wall I'm sure. Hopefully we won't find out.

Where are we?

We're in Kearney Nebraska. James Woods was just passing through a few days ago. We also just missed 30 Hells Angles. This place is called an oasis, but it feels a lot more like a wasteland. Terrain getting flatter...

Nap time...

Andy needs a nap. I suppose i'll have to change his diaper before we get back on the road. 6 more hours of daylight. Looking forward to the sunset... http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&geocode=&q=41.25758349895477,-95.93314290046692&z=2
